We all have heard of the brand Calvin Klein, first we associated it with clothing but now they sell anything from underwear to cologne for men. But is cloths and cologne the only things that they sell? From the looks of this add sex seems to be the number one priority and jeans are number two. As society grows and the demand for products changes the way we advertise it changes as well. Everyone has heard of the phrase "sex sells" and in this day and age it is very true. The claim being portrayed in this argument is buy Calvin Klein jeans and it will make you feel sexy and desirable. When looking at this argument you have the option of accepting the claim as true, you feeling sexy when you wear Klein jeans, reject the claim as false, or suspend judgment of the claim. Something that we all need to realize is just because we wear this type of clothing there is no guarantee we will feel sexy in them, did we just waste $100 on a pair of jeans that we though would make us feel better about our selves? As a young person living in this society we need to realize that these advertisements are out there to trick us, learning from our own judgments and experiences is the most important tool we can use.
AJ, I agree with you that, as being young members of society it is important to realize that these sexy ads are using sex appeal to try and lure us in to buy their product. However, I think the responsibility falls on the consumer to pay attention and realize if the advertisement is misleading and not fall for the trap the company sets for them. An advertisers job is to use extreme measures to sell their clients product. So "consumers be ware" is a statement all consumers should live by. Be cautions when believing ads, there is often hidden messages that we don’t consciously notice.
ReplyDeleteAJ,
ReplyDeleteEveryone knows sex sells products. Guess is not the only company that uses sex appeal to market their items. Some of these companies may include: Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, Victoria's Secret, or Georgio Armani. But this sex claim may be true. If you spend 100 dollars on a pair of jeans, this might boost ones self confident making them feel sexy. This boost just might be worth 100 dollars for some people. I dont think using sex as advertisements is there to trick us. Its just a method for companies to have consumers purchase their products.
but overall good job AJ! I like your standpoint
ReplyDeleteWhoa I was going to use this same exact image for my advertisement! But I decided to use the one I currently have on right now because it actually has a specific pair of jeans they're trying to advertise. Anyway, sex definitely sells and I think many of the ads shown in today's society depict sex to attract their customers. Sometimes, though, people don’t consume these certain jeans just to feel sexy or desirable. They may spend a good hundred bucks to purchase that specific pair because the material may be very good, or it may actually fit comfortably around them. however, we definitely do have to be cautious when surrounded by these types of ads. Good post! =)
ReplyDeleteFive comments. I notice alot of people agree with this post, as I do too. This is a great example of misleading advertising. It seems we mostly agree that these ads try to sell sex, and portray it in their products. I agree it is the responsibility of the consumer, like DeeAnn points out. The consumer should recognize that buying the product will not automatically make them look like the couple in the ad. Still, there are consumers out there, who purchase these products in order to make them feel sexier. It is still their responsibility to know they won't be like the people in the ad just by buying the clothes, but some people care about their clothes too much to care.
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree. Sex does sell. I seen a lot of sexual and sexy advertisements that are irrelevant to what they are trying to persuade the consumer to do and they are eye catching. The whole point to this is to get the consumers attention and go, "Oh damn look at them, oh wait that's Levi's?" The exact same thing goes for axe and old spice commercials. They have hot, sexy, beautiful women that catches a guys eye and show the product they are selling in a part of it that pretty much gets the consumer's attention. Funny how all this works, but hey, it works!!
